Hulu recently updated their Apple TV app to an unnavigable mess. It removed a great deal of simplicity and the ability to easily see what hasnt been viewed, whats new, and how many episodes are left in a given series. Its so bad that I have turned off automatic updates on my iPhone because in order to find out what I want to watch, I open my phone first, view the information there, and then search on the god-awful TV app for what it is that I want to see. Hulu needs to go back to the interface that it had before instead of whatever trendy bs nonsense theyve inflicted on the TV App. - Update - I appreciate that Hulu has contacted me regarding this review. Pointing me to the guide to the new apps functions is not what I asked for. I feel that if there has to be a guide, then the developer has failed. Interaction should be intuitive, and requiring a guide is a step back to the last century method of computing. Weve gotten past this, Human Interaction is a developed field of study now, and the new TV App apparently had no guidance from years of study to influence it. For example - the selected item in the TV App is indicated by a line ABOVE the selected text. One need only look at publishing norms from the beginning of print many centuries ago to know that we UNDERLINE important words. Menuing back takes many steps now, and its not clear what the path back has been. Theres no sense of space any more. The TV app has the look of a designer who is trying to bring about a new trend, and is focusing entirely on pretty pictures instead of proven modes of interaction. Its the same kind of pretentious nonsense that many young artists produce when they think they can abandon the history of art that came before because they feel superior to the old masters and can learn nothing from them. Its ephemeral trendy garbage, soon forgotten. Go back to what works, or at the very least conduct extensive usability research before losing all design equity.
