The UX of the new Apple TV app is akin to using one of those self checkout machines at the supermarket... unintuitive, slow, cumbersome to operate and wont stop talking.
We live in a visual world. Why you chose to replace the show artwork we all immediately recognize with only a glance with the title of the show and some random image from it is mind boggling. But thats just the start...
Only being able to see one show at a time (most that I dont even watch) is incredibly annoying. I know what Im watching, know whats on and know what I dont want to watch. Im not using the app primarily to discover. I use it watch what I want when I want. So show me that. And show me all of it at once like you did before so I can pick up where I left off. I understand the need for a refresh/rebrand. But as a UI/UX designer, I can tell you that the old adage, "progress for the sake of progress" is certainly not progress. This could not be more true when applied to your new "look". Which I find ironic since your new look makes it nearly impossible to see anything. Id rather look away.
The UI is fine, I can get used to it. But the UX is seriously lacking. Form is clearly miles ahead of function. When redesigning anything once must always ask whether the new design is necessary. If it is, identify why. Then, come of with a solution to solve or improve the answer to the previous question. The answer in this case was clearly, "cause we just want a new look." Good design is good if users dont need to be told how to use and most importantly, enjoy using it at all. Your redesign looks different, Ill give you that. But the experience has been ignored. Good UI should hardly be noticed so that the content take center stage. Good UX should be obvious and improve the way a user performs a certain function. Your redesign doesnt meet either of those so why was this approved? Its a serious question that deserves a serious answer. Im a Hulu fan and have been since it came out. Id like to continue to be one.
